We used a shot-pinning process with micro-spheres to generate multiple spherical micro-pockets on the metal surface. The formation of the pockets proceeds mostly in Vickers indentation scenario. In result, some volume of the material is extruded plastically above the contact plane. Please, see measurements in attached file. Currently we removed these extruded peel-ups by gentle lapping. However, it works only for flat surface. Please suggest how these peel-ups can be removed without removal of micro-craters.

I can suggest to try etching gas plasma source with circuit electron drift.
We use these sources to remove the upper defect layer on metal parts.
One micrometer is etched about an hour, it is possible faster, but temperature of treated surface rises.

It is an interesting option. I would appreciate if you address a few details of this process (if possible):
1) Can we expect that the pile-ups (edges of the craters) will be etched faster than the plateau in between them? (Otherwise we lose the depth of the micro-pockets);
2) Is material removal rate uniform across the nominal free-form surface (e.g. knee joint geometry);
3) Which range of Ra, Rz values is typical for this treatment ? (particular interest is for Ti6Al4V, CoCrMo, SS316)
