Lamb wave is useful for solid structure health monitoring, and it consists many modes. Unlike ultrasonic bulk wave, when given a pulse excitation (for example, 5-cycle sinusoidal pulse), only boundary or damage can reflect a signal back, so it can be easily reconstructed or simulated by MATLAB. How to reconstruct a Lamb wave like this? Start from a simple aluminum plate, and give it a 5-cycle sinusoidal pulse, how to predict the signal received at another spot?

You can use the Dispersion Calculator to simulate the signal of single and multiple Lamb wave modes after propagating a certain distance in an isotropic plate. First calculate the dispersion diagram in the "Isotropic" tab. Then go to the "Signal simulator" and select the material for which you have the dispersion curves. The rest is easy. You can simulate it in a finite element (FE) software e.g. ANSYS or ABAQUS explicit etc. Excite the lamb wave signal at one node and record it at another. The MATLAB simulation results fits well with experiment.
But when I use finite element software, ABAQUS, it doesn't work well.
I think that how to apply loads in FEA is important. Now, I use a concentrated force in ABAQUS to simulate PZT or PWAS transducers, but the result doesn't agree with the experiment.
So, how to simulate lamb wave excited by PZT in ABAQUS ?

The application of load depends on the mode of Lamb wave you want to excite. To excite the S0 mode, you will apply the concentrated load but in radially outward directions, see the attached figure. In ABAQUS, you can draw a circle (with diameter same as the size of PZT transducers you used in the experiments) and then partition that circle into 16 or 32 parts using partition face/edge menu, then apply the concentrated load in cylindrical coordinates. In order to do that, you have to define a cylindrical coordinate system with origin at the center of the PZT transducer. Apply a unit load 1 in x and 0,0 in y,z directions, and choose the sinusoidal option from the loads menu, you will also need to input your excitation signal data with respect to time separately, only then the application of sinusoidal load option with appear. The final form after application of load at PZT location will look like the attached figure. Hope, it helps.

At first, use dispersion diagram to figure out the phase and group velocities. Select appropriate frequency and mode and then simulate in Abaqus. For simulating in Abaqus, you can use pressure or displacement loading to create waves. For example, to creating L(0,1) use in phase displacement. Use opposite in phase displacement to create L(0,2) lamb wave. There are some examples of creating different lamb wave on the pipe section.
