I need to use lanthanum nitrate hexahydrate precursor for synthesis using wet chemical method. However, the raw material is in the form lanthanum oxalate. It is the result from local mineral extraction. Is it possible to convert it into lanthanum nitrate hexahydrate. Can anyone tell me how to prepare it? Thank you.
You can prepare Lanthanum nitrate from Lanthunum oxide. Exactly you have to take the stoichiometric amount of nitric acid dropwise added to the mixture of Lanthanum oxide in water. At room temperature, this reaction mixture won't soluble. So you need to heat the mixture until solubility comes. Just evaporate the mixture.

Use stoichiometry and determine the amount of NO2 you need and add to the Lanthanum oxide aqueous solution. Induce the reaction by heating the system until you observe soluble reactions.

The previous respondents did not observe that you are starting with the oxalate, which will need to be oxidised one way or another. Can it be decomposed to the carbonate simply by heating in air? If so, that could be 'titrated' with the requisite amount of HNO3. Otherwise the oxalate may be decomposed by an xs of HNO3. These are guesses from first principles.
