We are going to do PIV measurement in a gas turbine combustion chamber (cold test). For reducing the complexity of the measurement, is there any idea how we can model both the fuel and oxidizer with water (as working fluid) instead of using real fluids?
How do you intend do spin the turbine up to operating speeds? What do you hope to learn from a cold test? Somebody is running a hot test on a turbine right now at one of the many facilities around the world. If you want meaningful measurements, why not use actual operating conditions? GE and Siemens are proud of their engines, have published papers, and may give you some real operating data. After all, they want to sell their equipment. Solar (Caterpillar) sells smaller engines if you're interested in those. I have a lot of this type of data, but I can't give it to you because of confidentiality agreements. There are several shops that rebuild gas turbines (for instance in Houston, TX and Calgary, Alberta) maybe they'll send you some data. These engines cost a fortune. Where do you have access to such a machine that doesn't also have the facilities and instruments to do a hot test?

Cold tests are the first steps in design of new combustion chambers . These kind of tests usualy give you an impression about mixing of Fuel and Oxidizers inside the combustion chamber. On the other hand, hot test PIV is a demanding task which needs expensive facility and also complex techniques. Experts usually use Shadography techniques to chapture the temeprature fielddue to aforementioned reason.
We have used already water model when the fuel and oxidiezer are both in gasous phase with a dinemntional analysis on Reynolds number.
Now I would like to now if it is meaningful to reapet the same experiment(water+water) if one phase is liquid (gasoline) and the other phase is gasous (air)? This is for reducing the complexity of the flow under investigation from two phase flow to one phase flow1
There is considerable interest in designing low NOx burners and effectively using alternative fuels, including landfill gas and bio-fuels. Both are problematic. I have experience with several operating facilities. The ones burning landfill gas must deal with lots of undesirable chemical components and very low (45%) methane content. Siloxane is a huge problem with landfill gas. It cruds up everything pretty quickly and is very expensive to remove. Bio-fuels introduce several problems with emissions. These are two area where research is much needed, including combustion chamber, fuel nozzle, and flame arestor design. The temperature distribution within the combustor is also an area of research and how this impacts the formation of NOx and other undesirable emissions. There are some CFD modeling efforts, but much of the design has been trial-and-error. I wish you well with your approach, as there is much need for improvement.
Thanks for your answer, Dudley. Do you have any Idea how temperature distribution is measured within the combustor (both in liners and flame) rather than laser techniques. I am aware of using Thermal Sensitive Painting on the combustor liners to measure Temp but not for the flame itself!
