How to modify pinmux modes on Beaglebone black?

Hello everyone,

I am working on Beaglebone black for driving a robot. I have the board pre-configured for 3 PWM's(P8_13, P9_14 and P9_31). I understand that the P9_31 is a reconfigurable digital but while trying to activate it as a PWM I get an error stating that the device is busy. How can I enable this PWM on mode 7? I am working on debian 7.11.
