Dear all, I need to develop for my PhD Thesys the basic model of an islanded microgrid comprising renewable generation sources and storage systems. Would you kindly to provide me with some advice regarding the following issues:

  • In my perception, starting of main motors may unbalance the islanded grid in case these are not driven by variable speed drivers due to current peaks. I am unsure on how to model the corresponding transients, I specifically mean sample times.
  • Regarding generator sources I believe you may consider different models being different because of their corresponding degree of development that you can specify by assigning a numeric order to the model e.g we then would have order-3, order-5 and following generator models. In case my perception is correct would you kindly to recommend me which in your opinion is the most adequate generator model order and some related technical literature which I can consult.
  • Are there similar models for motors? Where could I consult them?
  • After this initial offline simulation stage I would face real-time simulation with HIL or another means. Does this approach involve any constraint or requirement that I should need to consider in this previous off-line simulation stage?

Please feel free to comment on all the above and also to provide any suggestion that in your opinion could help me with my work.

Thanks in advance! I appreciate all you kind help and support.
