I am currently undertaking a project focused on measuring the residual stress of different materials post-cold and heat treatments, as well as under various machining conditions with different coolant supplies. However, I find myself in need of guidance regarding the most appropriate method for conducting these measurements.
I would greatly appreciate any professional advice or recommendations you may have on this matter.
The best mctod is an X-ray diffraction analysis of the lattice parameters. See the relevant textbooks
Aside from XRD, which has its problems, for larger samples that you will probably have for heat treatment studies, you can use strain gauges. For example:

A lot depends on your exact geometry and needed accuracy.

it is possible to use digital image correlation for such analysis, as through "DIC" it is possible to verify broad deformation fields with precision and also obtain elastic properties of the material under analysis, and study it in more detail and its behavior in the phase elastic.
There are open source codes in the community as well as 'Free Trial' versions of the commercial versions.
In Matlab, the community has several open codes.
