I teach English in a college in China. The students here are not interested in learning English, nor do they study diligently to make up for the defect. Their English standard is quite poor. I ask them to answer questions in class but they are indifferent. The students are mostly about 17-19 years' old in my class.

Tell them that studying any language improves their interest in life and makes them better prospects for job opportunities. Try it, at least.
Look for other Chinese people who learned English, and tell them if they want to have a happier life they have to learn languages.

I would strongly recommend incorporation of all kinds of technology tools such as language learning applications, videos and maybe also language games to make the language learning process more engaging and interactive. Usually young students love utilizing their mobile phones and learning new things easily becomes a by-product of active mobile phone use.

Student profiling. Identifying the learners first is a great help in the learning process . Through this, we will be able to understand their needs, their interest, their strengths, their weakness, their preference, learning styles, and even their varied intelligences. In a way, we can align our instructions and assessments according to the diversity of learners. Though differentiated instructions posited several challenges , yet, the most ideal per se for students obtaining competencies.

I think for teaching anything - whether it is English or anything else - it is very important to make it sufficiently interesting for the people in the class (I mean the students, of course) and better than that, I think it is good to give them more incentive to get them more interested and this way, they want to keep getting better and get more rewards for doing that.
Well, it is with the pedagogical knowledge of teachers that this aim will be achieved. So we will start with the knowledge that the student is bad in English. Delving into deeper understanding why the student is bad in English {need analysis} and competency appraisal can be of great help for these will serve as the basis in framing appropriate assessment and tasks to learner. Further, understanding learner’s capacity and dealing with those areas that needs to be enhanced, intervention programs and practices are essential. These mechanisms can provide the atmosphere of conduciveness in learning for the value of the learning process will be felt by the learner thus the learning engagement will be boosted.
