Hello all,
I want to measure the intensity(W/cm2) of ultrasound produced by an ultrasonic bath. I used bruel kjaer 8103 hydrophone to convert the sound waves to voltage.
Now I got the voltage signal (I am attaching the figure below), but, I don't know which signal metrics I should use. Should I take rms or peak to peak ?

Depends on the frequency of interest? Do Fourier transform of the signal.
I would say that RMS and peak to peak have both pros and cons.
Peak to peak will give you a local maximum whereas RMS will give you a mean. I would say that the RMS is more informative because peak to peak will be highly dependent on the part of signal you choose to analyse (and it seems quite variable even at the scale of the recording you show here).
Depending on how controled the environment where you recorded was, I would also suggest to filter the signal to keep only the frequency band of interest and get rid of the potential sources of noise that could add unwanted extra intensity in the measurement.
