AIBN is an initiator of free radical polymerization but it is a "foreign" substance to the reaction system that will initiate the process. It is not considered as photo initiator & it produces "the first" radicals by small rise in temperature.
This type of polymerization consists of 3 steps: initiation, propagation, and termination.
The propagation step is the RDS "rate-determining step". Any study aiming at finding out the activation energy of polymerization will focus upon this step trying to find the rate constants at 2 temperatures & then applying Arrhenius's famous equation.
This kinetic study requires well-equipped laboratory and thorough work since many free radical polymerizations are fast in the propagation step.
