I am sure you must have figured out a solution by now (since you posted the question 2 years back). However, here is what I found useful for calculating PBLH using the sounding data from the above mentioned website. Observed Diurnal Cycle Climatology of Planetary Boundary Layer Height, Liu, Shuyan; Liang, Xin-Zhong, Journal of Climate, vol. 23, issue 21, pp. 5790-5809. The authors have used a FORTRAN code that they developed for calculating PBLH using the sounding data.

Dear Dr. Silli, You can download the boundary layer height data from NOAA READY website. It is available from GDAS and its resolution is 1X1 deg. Check whether it is useful or not. For more details you can write to me at:

The data for station 72240 LCH Lake Charles Observations at 12Z 08 Feb 2016

contains the following two entries:

Temp [K] of the Lifted Condensation Level: 270.78

Pres [hPa] of the Lifted Condensation Level: 837.68

The LCL can be taken as the top of the Boundary Layer so there is no need for you to calculate it. OTOH, it varies considerably through out the day, so your 12 hour values will have to be chosen carefully.

One word of caution. I am not an expert but there are two types of boundary layer - convective and stable. The LCL marks the top of the convective boundary layer (CBL) which forms during the day when the surface is warmed by the Sun. At night the stable convective layer grows from the surface, within the CBL, as the air is cooled by the cold surface. I suspect it is the stable layer which traps aerosols. The top of that layer will be where the potential temperature no longer rises with altitude.
