How to differentiate shadows from darker regions in SAR images?

I am working on shadow segmentation in SAR images and I'm basing my work on the following article :

Article A New SAR Image Segmentation Algorithm for the Detection of ...

As the approach is based on the intensity level of the SAR image, sometimes, depending on the content of the image, some darker regions are identified as shadow regions, as in the image below. In my case, it would be interesting to segment only those which correspond to true shadows. Does anyone know how it could be made ?

But sometimes, dark regions pixels are as dark as shadow pixels or even darker. Is that histogram approach always valid in this case?
