Could you please explain how to determine the energy levels of a molecule by knowing their constituent atoms energy levels? what is the difference between energy levels of atoms and molecules?
atoms combine to form molecules through Chemical bonds, in doing so, there is formation of a charge distribution different from that of the individual constituent atoms, to obtain the energy eigen-functions of the molecule you must solve the corresponding Time independent Schrodinger equation.
you can look into Molecular orbital theory , Molecular orbitals are formed as linear combinations of atomic orbital functions , it is covered in any standard Physical chemistry/Quantum Chemistry Text, i would recommend the book of Quantum Chemistry by I.Levine in this regard.
I checked that book. It was great but it does not satisfy me about my question. may be it is essential to expand my question by some example.
For example if we know Carbon and Oxygen atoms energy level, could we determine CO2 or CO energy level? or if we know F and C energy level, could we determine Fe3C energy level? and so on ...
