Usually, data mining read IOT readings to discover insights. For example, the readings of the IOT in a broken plane may be sent to the cloud for analyzing the sequence of events happened and know that exact cause. The same for a wind farm that IOT collect readings about Wind velocities and direction and data mining select the best orientation direction to maximize the energy generated.
In IoT, sensors with internet connectivity plays a vital role in sensing the environment in order to automate a process. For instance, If we consider a Natural disaster monitoring system, it need to collect a lot of information regarding the environment such as temperature conditions, wind speed and so on. These data can be accumulated from the interconnected sensors (via internet/any other local communication techniques). In order to make a decision/ prediction regarding a natural disaster event, all the sensor data need to be fused and analyzed. This is the place where we can combine the data mining with the IoT.
due to the continuous collection of different Data in the IoT, more and more Data is accumulating. This leads to large amounts of Data and is called Big IoT Data.
Big Data in the IoT often contains valuable information known as Knowledge. In order to filter these out, the large amounts of data available must be analysed accordingly. This analysis, as a kind of data investigation, is called Big Data Analytics (BDA). It leads to Knowledge Discovery in Databases (KDD).
Data Mining has an important function in KDD. My Model for Knowledge Discovery in Big IoT Data illustrates the function of Data Mining (see Figure).
The Big Data originating from an IoT system are - after a Preparation (Data Preparation) - analyzed in detail. This analysis is called Data Mining and is designed to identify patterns and trends in order to predict the future behavior of the system being studied.
Data Mining should allow to determine a prediction of the system behavior. That's why we also speak of Predictive Analytics. The core task of Data Mining is Predictive Analytics.
Note: Big Data Analytics and Data Mining are often considered synonyms - unfortunately wrong. As my illustration shows, Data Mining is part of Big Data Analytics.
