The method of an investigation in my modest opinion depends on the object of investigation, each paradigm, the quantitative, the qualitative or the mixed has research methods and techniques capable of responding to each situation. There is no perfect method, I think that in order to select the right ones you have to know very well the state of the art of the problem being investigated.

Research Methodology is depends on which type of objectives you have for the research. According to the process you are going to follow will decide the methodology. Again it is all dependant on the researcher to choose it. There is no any perfect technique for research.

I think the topic and research area determine research methodology.

In my humble opinion, it depends on your research objectives. For example, if you want to look into relationship between variables, quantitative approach is more suitable. But if you want to explore or understand the phenomenon, qualitative approach may address your research objective properly.

In relation to your question, the research method it must respond to the objective of the specific investigation. Now, in my opinion, a way to find the correct research method is the development of a "systematic literature review" in this study field. At present, personally, I think that any literature review it must include the use of the scientific databases as Scopus or Web of Science.

You need to check the previous studies in your filed and read the most related papers to your subject , this will help you to choose the best methodology for your research which should achieve the research objectives.
