I want to plot spatial variation of monthly averaged total fire counts for my region of interest. I am using MODIS/Aqua Thermal Anomalies/Fire 5-Minute L2 Swath 1 km data which is in hdf format and I have seen the scientific datasets of HDF files using hdftool command. But, there is no such scientific datasets called' 'fire count'. So, my question is how can I compute the fire count from this data using MATLAB? Any suggestion? Thanks.
I'm giving one sample hdf file below if it helps.
1. Each amplitude of the satellite data frame is expanded into a Chebyshev-Hermitt series.
2. Frames with frequencies corresponding to the fire temperatures according to Debye's theory are selected.
3. Fire zones are counted at each frame.
You can use the "Fire Mask" dataset to identify the pixels where MODIS detects fire. It has values ranging from 0 to 9 out of which 7, 8 and 9 represents fire with some confidence.
7 Fire (low confidence, land or water)
8 Fire (nominal confidence, land or water)
9 Fire (high confidence, land or water).
The next step is to form a grid with resolution of your choice and then compute the total number of times MODIS detects fire within that grid for a certain period of time. This will give you the "fire count".
Always read the user guide before using any satellite product. The structure of level 2 data can be tricky to understand in the beginning.
