We have an ebeam evaporator in the cleanroom. A couple of months ago there was a thunderstorm that knocked down the power of the whole building so the Turbo pump from the ebeam evaporator was exposed to vacuum (at least that's what I think). We sent the pump for service and got the pump back two weeks ago but the pressure can only pump down to 2.2E-7 Torr, not like it was before (3E-8 Torr).

The current evaporator has two pump in series. The scroll pump is a dry pump and does not have oil in it because it is sitting in the clean room. After the pressure got pump down to E-2 Torr by the scroll pump the turbo kicks in to bring the pressure to an even lower limit. It has a water cooling cold ring for sample cooling at the top. The bell jar is almost half meter in diameter (so it is pretty large).

I was wondering whether there is anyone who has come across with the same issue and could provide possible suggestions for us, in order to achieve a good vacuum, preferentially 5E-8 Torr. I would be really really grateful!

So far we have tried:

1. Service the Turbo pump from the original manufacture

2. Replace the bell jar O-ring

3. Roughed with two different scroll pumps (which indicates the problem doesn't come from the scroll pump, without oil of course)

4. tightened various KF fittings

5. vacuumed out the system including the turbo screen.

6. bake with heating tape (only 3 meters, probably not enough but that's what we have at the moment, possibly needs to get a blanket.)
