I have seen that few adaptive learning platform provide the periodic assessments as one of their modules so that students should retain whatever they have learned. It takes place after some period of time when a student has done learning some topic. Among the topics a student has learned one randomly picked topic question will be asked to student to check whether he/she is retaining the learned material.
What is the algorithm behind this?
What is the optimum time after which a student should be given a topic to review?
If any related papers one can name/ give, it will be helpful.

These are most likely referring to spaced repetition approaches/algorithms. There are a variety of them available. The optimum time between intervals can vary based on a number of factors (e.g., the number of times the learner has seen it or the type of information that is being communicated).
