لم يكن أفلاطون أول القائلين بتناسخ الأرواح، وإنَّما سبقه في ذلك الحضارات الشرقية، ولاسيما الحضارة الهندية، إذ إنَّ تناسخ الأرواح كان أحد ركائز الديانة الهندوسية، ومثلما معلوم أنَّ الديانة الهندوسية أقدم تاريخيًا من أفلاطون، وهذا يؤدي بطبيعة الحال إلى أنَّ هذه الفكرة ظهرت عند الشرق لا عند الغرب.
