How oxidation affects the hydrothermal synthesis of chalcogenides since the process is not under vacuum?

In general, most of the synthesis processes of materials consists of a vacuum environment in order to avoid any impurity or unwanted reactions like oxidation etc. But as far as hydrothermal synthesis is concerned how can one avoid the oxidation reaction?
