Given the importance of "citation number" to the future careers of researchers, the following question deserves careful consideration:
How much "care" should a peer reviewer place on the "task of reviewing the Reference Section of a scientific paper" (to check for accurate citation by the paper's author(s) he or she as been asked to review by the editor of a peer-reviewed medical or scientific journal editor?

Daniela is correct, in my opinion. If a reviewer doesn't look very closely at the reference section of a paper, comparing the works cited with the text of the article, she/he is not doing her/his task properly.
I think it's important to careful check the references. Although rare, some authors self-cite or cite their friends to improve their bibliometrics. The worst case I saw was a researcher whose reference list compromised of 60% their work in a critical review article. If it was an opinion or perspective article it could have been understandable.
Indeed, the reference section of an article must go beyond just checking whether it conforms to a particular referencing format as shown on the journal's template. The review must look into the suitability and appropriateness of the references to the article. If there are very important references that can enrich the study which has not been cited, reviewers can make constructive suggestions. This would improve the state of the paper and make it very relevant to the academic world.
These are wonderful answers to the question. But from various answers. I still come up with another question- checking citations and reference list and appropriateness of citations in the context of the discussion, don't you think this will now elongate the period of review?. Checking appropriateness of citations would involve reviewers to look into the particular papers mentioned and probably perusing through. How simple will be exercise be to reviewers when now, people are considering length of review period in considering journal output for submission?
