Dear research fellows, I wonder if someone knows how much direct reduction of nitrogen on farmland costs in terms of lower crop yield expressed as EUR/kg nitrogen (or similar)? I understand that the figure depends on type of soil, crop etcetera but if someone has an estimate or any report I would be happy to take part of it. If the figure is valid for Denmark it would be spot on but I am happy if anyone can give any indication. Thanks in advance/Jörgen Held
I really can't answer your question because I'm not an agro economist expert, but I know that It's really important to reduce nitrate fertilization. "... Since only 30–40% of the N applied to soil is used by plants, a greater N use efficiency (NUE) could improve the yield and quality of crops, reducing economic costs as well as decreasing environmental degradation ..." and finally an excess of nitrate may contaminate water inducing cancer (through nitrosamines and other N-compounds), blue baby syndrome, and eutrophication.

I want to compare to ways of mitigating eutrophication; direct reduction on farmland vs the COASTAL Biogas concept where cast seaweed is collected, co-digested and the digestate used as an organic fertiliser.
