The subject line says it all. I would like to know how many people are learning English in China today? If possible, it would be good to have references to the source of information. Much of the information my students are finding is several years old (and I confess I have not had much opportunity to search for myself). Numbers in 2012 were of the order of 400 million+.

Pity that westerners do not learn Chinese languages too!
I am sure there are many, I wonder if anyone actually keep track of the number!
Almost all Chinese people studying English, ESP.all students from K-12,plus a variety of people in colleges and some companies.With the open and reform policy development for 40 years, it is very common. So it is hard to offer you the number.
Last year I gave a seminar on a Chinese edition of my book "Transforming Depression : Healing the Soul through Creativity." The Chinese audience understood me perfectly well and me them. In my experience, Yang Qiguang's comment is correct.
Thank you all. yes I agree of course. It's just that I need an academic reference with an estimate (or perhaps Chinese government census or...).
As mentioned by Yang Qiguang, the whole population of China could be considered as English learners. Maybe data on the number of students in the nation's education system could be used as an indicator.
I agree Syamsul Fozy Osman, but my students seem unable to find such statistics which is why I was asking here for some kind of legitimized estimate (it is true that I have not had time to look personally into this). I guess the information must be available.
According to statistics, 400 million people in China are learning English, accounting for 1/3 of the total population.
