The reason I am asking this question is that we are in the process of building an International Digital Employee Assistance Archive out of the University of Maryland..... and although we are at the 5th year of operation, it is still hard to engage researchers & others to submit their own materials so others can have FREE access to them all over the world.... Main issue of course is Copyrights..... Publisher's are reluctant to give us permission to place their publications/articles in a Free repository - Looking for suggestions on how to engage folks to both use this resource & add their own works to this archive....
Archives of whatsoever nature are the first and last hope to get the desired piece of information.

Thanks Ramesh..... and Avishag... I was not really asking in particular if folks wanted to contribute to our Archive - although nice idea... I was looking for a general response of how many and who use various Archives... There are approximately 1100 Archives in the US.... no clue what the national numbers are.... but in attempting to do PR and engage folks in our International Digital Employee Assistance Archive ( links below & brief article on particulars) I was more asking RG folks in general who uses Archives & Why.... to help our field ( EAPs) understand why this is the way of the future..... Thoughts?

I'm using archive all the time to find really useful piece of something. And you can cite your findings and you could discover something you. I just finish a book about Darfur peacekeeping mission (AMIS) and used files which never was seen or cited before. It's amazing to sitting and searching in libraries or archives.
Recently, I visited few corporate archives in metro cities, India;it is heartening to see that researchers use archives for their master projects and doctoral study especially business archives like Reserve Bank of India archive(RBIA)gets large number of scholars from Economics and banking sector.Once the research is complete they acknowledge the institute and subsequently donate to the archive a copy of their research.
Many history researchers use them; ours is well-used and I know another who travels to Scotland to use archives there...

Use but still people who are involved in historical research , are still consulting archives to get related document/ literature.

It sounds like there is quite a bit of use in India and also in various academic setting.... but am a little confused by Manoj's answer about the Internet providing information that an Archive might ... in that most Copy-writed articles are only on the Internet via publisher for a fee - usually a substantial one... at least here in the States... - Our Archive via the University of Maryland is International and Free to the Public...... Any clarifications....
As a historian and former library director, I find that anyone doing scholarly historical research for publication must rely on archival materials to guarantee the accuracy and credibility of their work. As the founding editor of the Kentucky African American Encyclopedia, I encouraged our contributing authors to utilize the archival repositories across the state to complete their entries. Primary source materials found in archives is of utmost importance to quality research.

The whole question of the use of archives is thought provoking. The department where I teach (information and knowledge management) just added this year the "Archival Studies" courses and I believe that future research here will touch upon various archival research questions.
