How long small pelagic fish has collapsed when it will be recovered? Small pelagic fish, such as Indo-pacific mackerel, has collapsed. Please kindly provide the some suggestion.
There are several theories to describe such phenomena. Most acceptable theories is climatic/ environmental factors. It is also observed that mackerel shows a inverse production with other pelagic fisheries like sardine. Although the production of mackerel may increase substantially after a considerable time, may be within 5-10 yrs. But flactuating production of pelagic fishes are very common worldwide.
I have noticed unusual small sized mackeral along southeast coast of India when I did a survey on climate change impact. Like Sutanu Kamakar mentioned, the sardine population has increased in mid-southeast coast, an indication of migration towards north. It was not so a few years back. May be this could also be linked to decline in mackeral?!!! But, here we believe over exploitation could also be one of the reasons for their decline or migration towards safer zones.
