How is Bispectral Index on EEG calculaed?

Bispectral Index is useful to monitor patients' anesthesia level. How is it calculated?

Most clinical anaesthesia texts will explain in general terms the concepts of processed EEG monitors such as BIS, however it uses a proprietary algorithm that is not public knowledge so the way it is calculated is not known to clinicians and researchers.
