Look at the industry that you would like to work in. Then look at the companies that offer that product or service. Then contact them about employment or internships. Be mobile and willing to go where the opening is. Have your resume or vita prepared. Then have it reviewed by a professor or friend that you trust. Answer any inquires promptly. Always send a thank-you note if you are given an interview. Good Luck!
Do what you can to stand out before applying. Excel in class, if you can. Do outside projects, particularly those which last more than a term. Make contacts outside of your department.
If you are interested in anything academic, look up the university and see what they are studying. Look up their publications, and read some of the most recent. Though you may only understand 10%, that is still good in a technical or scientific field. Ask someone for help understanding them.
As you contact them, show genuine interest. Even if you struggle reading their publications, your effort shows interest.
You can do the equivalent for a business or industry.
Referrals are the golden opportunities, if the person referring you can strongly recommend you. Anything you, and the employer or person offering the internship can do to avoid getting stuck with a problem is all to the good.
Your job as an intern is to help them identify their problems, solve their problems, avoid their problems, and not to be the problem.
Make lots of contacts. We have had students make 50 applications before. We have seen in our field an average of 16 applications per offer among qualified students. Be patient, especially if Congress is still in session. Seriously, a lot of internships here in this country hang on federal funding. Any hiccough at the federal level, and there are often huge delays in posting or granting internships.

You can actually go directly to their company website ( contact us) and write them a short letter of intent. There is another option while waiting , which is, your University or College where you belong can assist you through
" Internship program" . That is if there is an existing program. Good luck on your search and your defense.
