Suppose If I want to dig a well say near to the Arabian Coast (India), How far from Sea that I have to dig a well in order to avoid the salt water intrusion through coastal aquifers. I would like to know the approximate distance in kms that the salt water intrusion can take place.
I think that this is very much a local / regional issue. It differs from place to place. Maybe check with water authorities or even empirically with people who have dug wells in the neighborhood. In atolls of Kiribati, where I worked on water supply issues, the distance from the ocean to the lagoon is a few hundreds of meters at the most, but I am certain that in your places it is surely very different.
In Tamil Nadu, near to Chennai, salt water intrusion happened very close to the coast where fresh water was pumped to lorry tankers to provide it to the urban areas. Here I had the impression that intrusion can be a few kilometers inland.
Will check, if in my literature I have collected some mentioning on this matter is there.
