--The mission of my institute is: "Thought leaders and change masters." So research finds place in the goals of the institute; a Dean Research has been appointed to coordinate the research undertaken by the faculty
--We can apply to the institute for insider funding of short-term research projects up to INR 100000.
--Faculty's visits for research presentation in up to 3 national conferences a year, and up to 1 international conferences once in 2 years is funded by the institute.
--research award is given every year to one researcher for "Excellence in research" who has the highest points in research in the faculty.
--Those who publish in journals with impact factors are given cash awards for publishing in such journals, which consists of quite attractive amounts.
--Faculty is encouraged to go broad as a visiting professor to teach and research on full salary payment by the institute unless s/he gets a salary at the host institution
--Faculty is encouraged to bid for research projects offered by outside organizations.
Promotion in this college is based on good teaching, or transformation of students' abilities, admin work, RnD and ICC (innovative creative circles). But we have minimum facilities for doing research, and no research grant to buy review articles. Being a new college we asked and asked for a proper SPSS in just 1 computer, but still haven't got it, although some other colleges have got a valid SPSS. I'm allowed to use other people's SPSS.
All tenure-stream faculty members in the School of Arts and Sciences and the School of Engineering are expected to conduct research and produce scholarship. In so doing, tenure-stream faculty members are expected to extend the boundaries of knowledge and, where appropriate, to include students—undergraduate and graduate—in that endeavor. Thus, faculty research activities contribute to a vigorous intellectual climate. Tufts University seeks to encourage creativity and invention among its faculty, students, and staff.

At my institution each faculty member is given a financial reward for every publication. 2 international conferences are funded by the university every year. An award for the best researcher in science and engineering and for best in Humanities and scocial sciences.
Dear @Eddie, as usual, faculty members have to do research to get promotion, so, they are doing research to get promotion. There is also financial support, reduction of teaching load, attending conferences, and some other facilities.
Miranda, hope you will be granted your request for SPSS, it really helps researchers.
Lala Behari Sukla, Thank you for sharing Tufts University’s information on Faculty Responsibilities, it contains essential information on how your university motivates faculty to do research.
Debi, Nasser, and Abedallah, your schools provide an encouraging environment like ours.
Dear @Eddie,here is my personal example. I was motivated to do applied automation research which have lead to the development of a new product which I have described in the paper attached. I was motivated to do this project for some benefits (visit Japan, earnings for University and myself also,as research project was jointly financed by Science Foundation, University and Enterprise!
Of course, such activity is good for promotion also!
Article "Contribution to the Design of Small Parts Assembly System"
Deans and department heads can encourage research by making merit pay increases partly dependent on publishing papers. At least 30% to 40% of any pay increase should be on publishing research that helps advance the field in which a professor has expertise.
I work at the private faculty and one kind of motivation is promotion to higher positions (we have obligatory conditions for further career development and titles) and sometimes by rewarding system...
Solutions included securing administrative commitment to post-award staff support, hiring research active faculty with reduced teaching loads, and modifying tenure and promotion criteria to reward research productivity.
Research students were incorporated into mentoring communities to assist with career development experiences and resources.
Over the course of a decade, the institution increased the numbers of research-active faculty members, students involved in research, peer-reviewed articles, and external grant proposals.
Building research capacity in an emerging research institution also requires assessment of research management practices and identification of transitional practices to promote the evolving research agenda.
Dear Jelena Lukić , sometimes such approach at both State and Private Universities promotes "publish or perrish" practice. This is not good practice. Academics are forced to do it!
It's a very good question. With the motivation (financial and non-financial), a faculty member can enhance the intention to do research. Apart from the motivation, orzanization should focus on research environment, research collaboration. Finally, organization must give the funding facilities to do research.
Dear Ljubomir Jacić I agree completely with "publish or perish" situation... I have found myself sometimes in writing a paper as obligatory activity without real enjoyment...
It's a publish or perish practice in mine. No promotion until publications are up to a certain number. Spearheading research is another, to be represented by the number of 1st authorship. Winning research grants is also stressed.
