How does the magnetoresistance reflect the information of Fermi surface and so on?

From the magnetoresistance, we could get the information of the material's Fermi surface. i.e. scaling with B^2 indicates open orbits; whereas saturating as B goes to infinite (bird wing like) indicates closed orbits. I am wondering how does linear scaling mean? Does it mean 2DEG?

A related technology is developed in a type of computer disk in which the reading of magnetic domains on the surface is accomplished with an optical laser device using the stark effect. It was popular a decade ago, but not found in newer computers. The references can still be found. The advantage was a higher data density with fewer failures.
