Criticism of DEI initiatives can affect student perceptions of inclusion. Public critique of DEI activities can make the school less inclusive for students from marginalized backgrounds (Rodriguez & Kim, 2021). This discourse can disrupt trust key to safety and belonging and impact academic and social progress (Morrison et al., 2020). Extensive criticism of DEI may leave students unsure of what it accomplishes, which may lower their readiness to participate in diversity conversations (Singh & Martinez, 2022).
Unbiased students could strengthen their biases through the critique, and backlash could rule out the acceptance of different viewpoints (Harris & Lee, 2019). Given these circumstances, schools that manage critique and communicate goals and intentions contributors to a welcoming surrounding that supports students' success, and exciting conversations that can lead to mutual benefit increase student perceptions of inclusivity and the school's climate (Johnson et al., 2023). In short, DEI criticism may lower student perceptions of inclusivity, security, prospects, and a sense of belonging in their school.
