I'm interested in analyses and statistics showing what difference it does, if a parent helps with homework. What kind of support, is the best support a parent can give? Does it matter what job or educational background a parent has?
I was a Director of an outreach programme for an inner city community in which the parents were not always able to help students with their homework. The residents and the Christian church in the community came together to identify an outreach programme that would meet the community's needs. One such need was a Homework Supervision programme for the children. I can testify that the parents ensured that the children attended the homework supervision programme, which yielded very positive results for the children who were able to pass their secondary entrance exam. My response may be twist on what you expected, but the parents recognized their limitations and lobbied for the homework supervision, indirectly giving support to their children's homework.
I extend best wishes for a happy and prosperous New Year to you and your family and also in your research.
with parent support children will be committed to learning and ask them of further explanation to understand the question better and approach it appropriately. Parent are suppose to guide the child to do the homework by explanation and provision of resources that will facilitate learning. Parental educational background makes appropriate child support easy and most helpful.
The role of parents in the learning of children is very important, both in directly assisting with homework, and in a range of other ways. Parents who are engaged is an important predictor of learning outcomes. This role is often ignored by policy makers.
For example, the "No Child Left Behind" legislation in the United States penalized schools whose students did not improve on standardized tests, but completely ignored the confounding variable of parental engagement. So schools were penalized for failings of the parents, in at least some cases.
Parents are hugely important - as statistical studies consistently show. The affective support of the kind that helps children to accept failure and rejoice in success, the end goal being learning confidence, is crucial here. Best wishes Paul. PS Parental encouragement can even sometimes "outgun" social class background as an independent variable.
How does parents support in homework influence children's learning?
Just sharing my thought - we might need to operationalize these 2 constructs "parents support in homework" & "children's learning" i.e. what are their operational definitions & what instruments to measure the constructs e.g. does "parents support in homework" includes providing tuition fees, merely asking children whether they have completed their homework, hands on teaching children how to do the homework… doing the homework on behalf of children etc. Not sure “children’s learning” include capable to complete homework or get good results from the test etc.
What kind of support, is the best support a parent can give?
Not sure this should also include qualitative research e.g. via interview & observation etc. Think this depends on several factors like the children capability, preference, performance, surrounding environment, peer pressure etc e.g. some less capable children’s learning might not improve even after all sorts of support provided by their parents whereas some more capable children might not need any parental support at all in attaining their learning etc. Think providing a conducive learning environment by parents might support the children learning.
Does it matter what job or educational background a parent has?
Generally think job or educational background of a parent has no bearing on children’s learning in which finding parent’s expectation on children learning / performance is more important factor because came across cases whereby some very educated parents (or parents with higher Social Economic Status / SES) didn’t improve their children’s learning (they might be too busy, no time etc.). Also came across very poor parents who values the importance of education & don’t want their children turn up like who they are now & insisting in giving the best learning environment for their children.
Parental involvement is essential...not for handholding or answering for the ward...but to guide the child in analysing the problem and handholding during the application process..
In the earlier stages of primary education for the children any where in country ,whatever may be the standing of parents especially of father it becomes a moral responsibility to look into & also to take care of study of children .
Sometime parents may take the services of professional who can take care of the study of their children .But to us it is not a right & healthy practice for the parents to overlook the study of their children in their line of thinking .
Parents must understand that it is a children who become the life for us if children have made a good headway in his life it is the parents who are receiving the hat from the children.
We should not forget that in earlier life of children they are to be taken care ,they should be nurse,& nurture , with the result children we receive more affection from parents which will make happy & comfortable in their day to day play & also their study .
