I am currently seeking to produce a book by selecting ten articles from my research profile. I search your input on strategies, tactics and skills of creating a flowing book out of articles that were initially published separately?
Dear Musa W Dube, the most important thing is that there is a common theme for the articles. I think that a trajectory of the object of study and the researcher can be shown, but it is indispensable that a judicious and systematic edition is made.
I think the most important thing is to have a common theme (as Fabian says) and to articulate this clearly in a well written introduction. The introduction should explain how the 10 items show progression and together form a satisfying whole. It should justify why the pieces are republished and republished together. It would also be good to have a foreword by a scholar who knows your work who can comment on the value of a collected-together volume.
I tend to value if the publications are annotated - e.g. with updates and with notes that refer to other works in the volume (again, to tie the whole book together).
