You can make the official languages compulsory for students to do in the curriculum according to their region. The latter would make these languages compete with the English and Afrrikaans languages. Social media and debates can be used to create fun exercises to enhance students' language skills as shown in these recent conference papers I published.

Agree with Debra. Provided one could get departmental support, it might even be worth going bilingual with the local official language in the mornings and one or both of Afrikaans or English in the afternoons. It is worth noting that a lot of educational resources around the world are in English and that it currently has a global hegemonic status as a lingua franca. However, that doesn't make it the only language of learning.
