However, when TQM is applied to the T&L aspects of academia, there are concerns that it results in standardization of learning. This can defeat the real purpose of learning, which is all about keeping an open mind, exploring unchartered territories and constructing new knowledge. TQM in T&L seems to make academics reluctant to experiment with their T&L approaches and distinguish their uniqueness from one another.

As you would be aware TQM is about improving the service/product for the customer, in this case students. So applying TQM to universities is the same as for any other manufacturing or service organisation. While many uni department offer excellent service levels to both students and staff, the major barrier to the success of TQM is the mindset of many academics, who believe they are not providing a service and students are not the customer.

La TQM o la dirección con calidad, permite a los directivos de las instituciones y gerentes tener el control total de todos los proceso mediante el uso de indicadores como los que ofrece el Cuadro de mando Integral del Balanced Scorecard como un sistema de administración o sistema.
