In the context of structural engineering and applying evolutionary computation, I have found that in some truss problems the solutions tent to a local optima. how this problem is avoid?
This is a very common problem with EA, and there are many different ways of trying to prevent it, and to make use of it.
One way is to implement "random restarts". Search for the phrase.
Another is to assign a penalty to the objective for a region around the local optimum (or optima) that you have already found.
Searching for "niche methods", and "tabu search." with "evolutionary algorithm" should bring up many suggestions.
Good luck!
