In my opinion, Fematosecond LASIK surgery is a great revolution in correction of refractive errors such as myopia, hypermatropia and astigmatism with its precision , safety and outcome. Cost is the only factors in its way.
Everything depends on what are your primary endpoints and outcomes you want to evaluate.
Metaanalyses, and experience has shown that for the major primary endpoints and outcomes after 3-months there is nowadays no difference even between (Femto)LASIK and PRK!!!
So I cannot believe (and have not seen it yet) that the outcomes of femtoLASIK are by any means superior to mechanical LASIK!!!
Of course the flap might be more precise, the flap thickness better controlled, maybe short term results are better. But risks are still there, since the technique remains the same. You do not have free-caps but haze at the interface, you do not have aberrations but rainbow glare.
Modern refractive surgery, whether fLASIK, mLASIK, epiLASEK, aPRK, or TransPRK are all very good and the main difference does not relate to the way the stroma is reached.
Best way, would be running a well design comparative study...
