Adhesive shoulder capsulitis, also called frozen shoulder or periarthritis, is a self-limiting condition of variable clinical manifestations that is characterized by severe shoulder pain in early stages and gradual limitation of active and passive shoulder range of motion. It is an uncommon disease (2-5% prevalence) but its prevalence and incidence is increasing; affects middle age women (40-60 years) and is very limiting and can leave sequels. Its diagnosis in the early stages is often difficult since it has to be differentiated from other common shoulder conditions.
