I have been writing articles for a couple of years; however, I am still in the dilemma how logically we cite our references in our texts. What I wanted to mean if it is logical to refer from an article where that section itself actually taken the statement from other.

For example: Article A says: "People lives longer who have less sexual activity in life (XYZ et al. 1900). "

Now, what is logical? If I would like to make use of that statement, should I refer to Article A or XYZ et al. ?

My confusion is:

Whenever I mention Article A, I feel it is not his conclusion, it is something he also has hired.

One the other hand, whenever I refer XYZ et al. I still don't know if that is his conclusion; it may be his citation from others study. Likewise, I have to go on and on backward (pearl searching) to find the actual source who concluded the given statement in his study.

Any kind help will be highly appreciated to remove my doubts.

Please note, I have used others cited statements sometimes to articles, especially from their introduction part although it is not their conclusion of study; without knowing if that is correct. Probably, I was misguided? :(
