I believe that Research Gate has brought a great value to the scientific world and it is valuable experience to be a member of such community. I have attended some workshops for scientists in which we were told that the importance of social media in science is increasing. But still there are a lot of people who are not convinced that it is beneficial to become a member of RG and share here some research. I personally know such researchers. Thus here comes my question: from your experience what would you say is the greatest benefit of being an active member of RG or other social media portals for researchers?
For me, a large part of academia is interacting with others and sharing your research. What better way to do that via ResearchGate (or other Social mediate platforms)?
I have to agree with Eric. Some researchers do not share their knowledge and research, and they loose out. As DuPrez said: Knowledge not shared rottens in the heads of the beholders ....
Dear Christa! Thank you for this quotation! I will use it when I will be discussing with researchers who are unwilling to share the results of their work. Personally, I also know such people who do not communicate about their research on such portals as RG. Quite often they say that they don't have time for this.
I think there are two ways to use social media to benefit science and researchers. The first is to help researchers communiucate among themselves, whereas the second is to help informthe general public about science, how science functions, and how to understand the conclusions of science.
Social media can do both of these things.
