Is there any possible method to measure ultimate shear strength of a bulk object (in my case it's similar to a bulk soil) without using any testing equipment?
I don't need exact/accurate shear strength value since this one is used for feasibility study only.
I'm considering printing a small scale platform using 3d printer then add a motorized weight pendulum to control the compression rate.
Then in order to calculate the shear strength, I will calculate the
Force = mass of the pendulum x compression rate
then divide it with the cross section of the object.
Is that good enough for getting the approximate value of ultimate shear strength of the said bulk object?

You can use the strength of the material analysis to calculate the shear strength acting on a solid body. Your shear force is identified as the action that tends to cut the material. Draft your loading conditions in a proper manner. Then divide the calculated shear force by the sheared Area.

Yeah correct it might cut the material, actually I need the shear strength in order to calculate cutting force required for the material.
If that's the case, should I adjust the loading direction against the object instead? (outward direction)

As per my understanding as well. The material shear strength can be calculated with the material data available with you and the codal provisions you're following.

Apart from the density, we don't have any other data. Thus we would like to measure its shear strength first for design purpose.
The material itself is very similar to a bulk soil.
I read that usually for bulk soil shear strength measurement. They'd reccommend us to use direct shear test. However we don't have that equipment and would like to explore any other option for simple approximation only.
I'm not familiar with what you meant regarding codal provision. Would you mind to elaborate further regarding codal provision?

I suggested codal provisions for the calculations of shear strength capacities like we do in RC members. From your problem, it seems a different approach has to be used.
