Americans, constituting 5% of the world population, consume 85% of the world's illicitly produced drugs and 80% of the world's opiate based pharmaceuticals. The numbers are so disproportionate as to be almost unbelievable. To effectively deal with the growing addiction and overdose epidemic, the question has to be answered, but how to go about it? I brought it up to person, a prominent activist dealing with drug policy change in NYC, and he quickly found a way to end our conversation. His reaction is the norm when I ask the question. There is no easy or quick answer, How do researchers go about trying to answer a question that may seem broad and vague, but is the foundation of dealing with a growing social and public health crisis?
