No research, to the author's onowledge, exists to correlate learning outcomes to study or learning emphasis of physics masters students. Readon is that usually highly academically achieved students enroll in these masters. But this is just an assumptions that prevents progress and promotes social discrimination or wider student population prospective success.
Some ideas about factors
• proper& conscious emphasis of critical skills (assumption making, conceptual background of theories)
• constructuve utilization of lecture time
• methodical and self-aware of stste of onowledge past paper studying
• relevant journal article study, which deals with exciting ideas and extends tsught concepts

To answer the question from your original post, I think every individual student has different leaning styles. What works well for one student - such as one of the methods you stated, or some combination of them - may be different to what works well for another student.

What others do you have in mind ? i.e. textbook studying.
Do you think more general strategies used are more rewarding than learning methods?
Familiarity with candidacy exams, help of friend mathematician, oral discusssion intense participation, rmat lecture notes i.e. Wheeler , study groups are other forms of learning
