Natural Language Processing involves the analysis of the syntax (structure), and semantics (meaning) of language with the objective of comprehending the context of the matter being communicated. Unlike programming languages, which are basically consistent notation used for representing computational models (runnable on a Turing machine), natural language has complex semantics, metaphors, ironies and similes, and idiomatic usage which makes it very complex to decipher. I'm neither an expert, nor is AI my area of interest, but a good place to start would be the book "Artifical Intelligence: A modern approach" by Russell and Norvig (Part VII Communicating, Perceiving and Acting)
Language is language either machine or natural language. What I am looking for is how machine and natural language interfaces communicate in obfuscation to make us understand both.
