There is a certain difference in cure kinetics between the epoxy nanocomposites and the corresponding epoxy system without MWCNT. The MWCNT chemistry and mixing conditions control the quality of MWCNT dispersion and its modification and they will effect on the curing kinetic of the system. Attached is an example on the curing kinetic of epoxy clay. Hope this will help.
Depends on the functionalization of MWCNT.. If there are 'cure active groups' on MWCNT surface, then the rate of conversion increases... if you have functionalized MWCNT with 'non-participating' moieties then, reaction kinetics will not change or in some cases it can even be detrimental...
here's a paper which answers your question.. Polymer 49 (2008) 3310
Dear Sridhar.....thanks for your reply......means if we treated the MWCNT using nitric acid...then there will be the possibilities it will interact with epoxy chain.....and what should be the effect on the Urea formaldehyde resin.?......
By treating MWCNT with acid you will get acidic moieties on MWCNT surface.. so better choose an acidic curing system for your UF resin.. in that case, acid treated MWCNT will be advantageous.
After treated MWCNT by nitric acid, i have mixed with UF resin, then it have negative effects on the curing kinetics means it will need more energy for curing or have more activation energy. And when i go for SEM then no MWCNT appears in the cross-linking,,,,,,,why cnt not appears that means MWCNT exfoliated into UF resin......
Not finding MWCNT in SEM of composite!!! Then dispersion may be a problem..
please check SEM of acid treated MWCNT(before adding into resin), to confirm the structural integrity of MWCNT ... Excessive acid treatment will degrade MWCNT or may unzip MWCNT into graphene nanoribbons.
In my experience, many parameter can affect the cinetique of epoxy resin polymerization, I means size of particle, chemistry of surface and the kind of particles. If you have a strong fillers without chemistry interaction with the resin you obained a bad polymerization (bad composites).
