This is commonly done experimentally. Choose your solvent and electrolyte whichever you want to use. Fix an initial potential. e.g. 0 mV. Set the highest potential +100 mV and the lowest -100 mV. Run CV ( e.g with a scan rate 100 mV/s). If you don't see the solvent peak, increase the range of potential by 100 mV. Run Cv. Continue until you see a solvent peak . Fix this potential and continue to increase the anodic or cathodic potential until you reach a solvent peak.

Thank you for your reply, how about the choroamperometry, should I select the cathodic peak voltage form CV data and apply it when running the chronoamperometry measurement?

No! Apply the potential about 100 mV more negative then the potential of cathodic peak

You have to experimentally test it, check if there are electrode processes in the region you want to analyse (HER, OER, etc), then choose the electrolyte, salt concentration, etc etc etc, it is a experimental work, there is no rule towards that, it will depend in a huge amount of different stuff... A good start is looking at the literature what are the potential windows used in similar systems, and later you modify according to your design.

Dear Bello Isah,

If you are taking any redox couples (like M/M+, H2/H2O or O2/H2O etc.) and you know their standard redox potential (vs RHE) and fixed your electrolyte composition and then you can select the potential region for CV. Almost all the redox couple has some overpotential to start the reaction, you chose the potential window little below and little above from the standard redox potential. Then you will came to the correct potential window.

And for Chronoamperometry test if you want to do the reduction process then you have to apply the potential below the reduction (cathodic) peak potential (see the attached image for peak potential)and for oxidation you have to apply the potentail above the oxidation (anodic) peak potential.

a two-electrode's configuration system embrace co-changing[1] potentials across both the WE (Working Electrode) and CE (Counter Electrode) electrodes; so, it is not easy to find "how to select a discreet (or "right") potential window" for your electrochemical system, mostly when you want to modify a parameter (electrolyte's or WE parameters, temperature, etc. ).

You should add a RE (Reference Electrode, as 3rd electrode, e.g. a three-electrode's configuration system[2]) in order to investigate your WE (//electrolyte) properties inside a particular (correct, 'cool', 'right') potential window.

1. A two-electrode cell just gives you the current flowing between the 2 electrodes and none of the electrode potential is fixed, so that you can not know at which potential (vs a reference) a reaction occurs.
