I'm a research intern who has helped in this colorimetric sensor project. Now, we're in the image analysis phase so that we can depict the results of our color-changing experiments quantitatively. We've started using some programs such as Image J and Photoshop, but we don't know how to really begin this analysis without "eyeballing" for the right pixels and data. So, is there a certain way we can perform an image analysis in a more accurate way?
Could you explain a bit about how the colorimeter works? I ask this because that might give you a clue as to how best to perform the image analysis. E.g. for trouble shooting it makes sense to stay close to what is actually being measured.
Thanks for responding! There is no colorimeter. We have electrospun nanofibers to create a mat over a solution containing polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH). With a few drops of a strong acid and formaldehyde, the PAH is supposed to be indicated by a color change from clear to brown.
I thought there was a colorimetric sensor involved.
You could separate the RGB color channels, and determine which of the three best reflects the color change. The values of that channel give you a quantitative measure; the relation with PAH concentration could be according to the law of Lambert-Beer:
