I am trying to simulate a dynamic crash response of a sandwich panel. The machine that I am using is the Instron 9250HV drop-weight test machine with a mass of18.41 kg. There's no information on the material properties of the impactor. I am new to ABAQUS and I have no idea how to model it. Is there any advice on this?
I think you could start with the properties of the steel for the impactor ( E = 200 GPa, nu=0.3, and the density to meet your impactor mass with a given geometry, I guess something around 7.83g/cm^3).
There are vast amounts of literature out there on impact problems like this. Some of them also using FEA. I think the modeling of the sandwich plate element is the most difficult part. The impact is likely to be non linear, at least if you are testing to damage. I would start with a simpler object to impact, and look for simplified analytical models to validata your model and experimental work. It is possible that Hunters theory of Hertzian contact could be a start.
