I am required to calculate the torque acting on the rotary actuator so that a suitable actuator could be selected from the catalogue. The design is of a telescopic jib crane which will be mounted on a flatbed truck
The torque will have the following components:
1. Bearing friction of the assembly
2. Acceleration und Deceleration of the crane + load to be carried. This will probably be the main components. So you should probably calculate the maximum load at maximum extension and how long a movement +90° - -90° will take given a torque for the rotary actuator. Then decide wether or not this time is okay, or if you need a stronger actuator.
There is one aspect you shoud take care of:
if start a rotation and you have a load hooked its inertia will make it a pendulum. You have to limit the accelerations if not this could be dangerous for people, for the crane (it could compromise the overall stability) and for the load itself.
You can easily measure it using the brake dynamometer method.
