I've read from most of the literature said that the effective refractive index of SPP modes are larger than dielectric modes, thus the SPP modes get a high confinement. I still cannot totally understand why SPP modes get a high confinement. Does anyone know any equations to show the relation between effective refractive index and confinement of SPP modes? or could anyone give me some suggestions of how to determine the quality of confinement of SPP waveguides, like a MIM, taper or slot plasmonic waveguide, thanks a lot.
